LookPilot vs SmoothTrack
SmoothTrack is a clever, well-liked phone app: it uses your phone's face tracking and streams head pose to your PC over Wi-Fi. LookPilot gets to the same place with the webcam already pointed at you - no phone to mount, charge, or keep on the network.
SmoothTrack (phone app)
- One-time purchase, similar price to LookPilot
- Uses the excellent AR face tracking already in your phone (6DoF)
- Your phone is occupied: positioned facing you, screen on, burning battery
- Pose streams over Wi-Fi (USB mode available); on Wi-Fi, latency follows your network
- Requires opentrack on the PC for curves and game output (official setup path)
- No gaze control (an optional eye-glance camera nudge only)
LookPilot + your webcam
- Runs entirely on the PC: webcam in, game protocol out, one app
- No phone mount, battery drain, or Wi-Fi hop in the loop
- 6DoF head tracking plus optional eye tracking
- Direct game output (FreeTrack/TrackIR, UDP, joystick, mouse) - no opentrack needed (but supported)
- Native Windows and Linux (including Steam Deck / SteamOS)
- $14.99 once, lifetime updates, 14-day free trial
When the other option is the better choice
If your PC has no webcam and you already own a recent phone, SmoothTrack plus free opentrack is a smart way in - especially for desktop setups where buying any camera is the alternative, and its USB mode tames the Wi-Fi latency question. If a webcam is already on your desk (or built into your laptop), LookPilot removes the phone, the mount, and the opentrack configuration from the equation entirely.
Common questions
Which has lower latency?
On Wi-Fi, the phone path adds a network hop; SmoothTrack’s USB mode largely addresses that. LookPilot processes frames locally and hands the pose straight to the game with no hop at all. Real-world results depend on your hardware; the free trial lets you compare directly.
Do I need opentrack with LookPilot?
No. LookPilot outputs FreeTrack/TrackIR, opentrack UDP, virtual joystick, and mouse directly. If you already love your opentrack curves, LookPilot can feed opentrack over UDP instead.
My webcam is only 30 fps. Is that enough?
Yes. The tracker is tuned for standard webcams; 60 fps feels a bit smoother but 30 fps is the normal, well-supported case.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, 14 days with the full feature set and no credit card required.
